Situated 50 km from Troyes, Essoyes is a bubble of serenity on the borders of Champagne and Bourgogne.
The river Ource, so dear to Renoir, flows through the village. This picturesque village lives to the rhythm of the bell tower of the church of Saint-Rémi, whose organ is a listed historic monument.
Essoyen & Essoyenne are the names given to the 730 inhabitants of this village, which is full of surprises…
A CHARMING DESTINATION
Situated in the heart of the Côte des Bar region, the rolling hills surrounding the village are covered in vines.
Proud of its wine-growing tradition, Essoyes is the southernmost commune in the Champagne AOC. It is part of the Champagne Tourist Route. Essoyes is also a member of the « Coteaux, maisons et caves de Champagne » a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2015.
ALL ROADS LEAD TO ESSOYES
There’s no better way to admire this landscape than by taking one of the many footpaths or cycle routes available.
Don’t miss the Plateau de Blu, the highest panoramic viewpoint in Aube, 8 km from Essoyes.
The village is also a stop-off point for pilgrims on the route to Compostela and the GR® 654.
Essoyes and its labels
Selected in 2012 by the French TV programme Le Village préféré des Français to represent the former Champagne-Ardenne region, this county town boasts three flowers awarded by the “Villes et villages fleuris” (Towns and Villages in Bloom) label, rewarding the town’s commitment to improving the quality of life and the overall appeal strategy implemented through the landscape, plants and flowers.
Essoyes is in the process of obtaining the “Petite Cité de Caractère®” label. Take a stroll through the streets and lanes to admire the rich architectural heritage, with its half-timbered houses.
Both the Maison Familiale and the Atelier Renoir have already been awarded the “Maisons des Illustres” label, making Essoyes the only village in the département to have been awarded this distinction, and one of only a handful in France !
