THE FAMILY’S SUMMER RESIDENCE

Opened to the public since 2017, the house in Essoyes was purchased by the Renoir couple in 1896. Madame Renoir fulfilled her dream of acquiring a second home in her native village. It was in this house, nestled in the south of Champagne, that Renoir, the Parisian, would become a property owner for the first time. Through this acquisition, Renoir was not only buying a house but also adopting a region.

Renoir fell in love with the village of the Aube : the generosity of the winemakers, the beauty of the landscapes, and the unique light of this Champagne region.

This vacation home would be passed down from generation to generation, all the way to the great-grandchildren. True countryside gatherings were organized among family members and close friends, reminiscent of the Déjeuner des Canotiers

A journey TO THE PAST

Access to the house is via Rue de l’Extra, on the side of the painter’s studio. A path leads you to the house. As you walk along this path, you leave the world of the artist behind and enter that of the man.

Crossing the threshold of the family home, you step into the atmosphere of the Belle Époque, with an interior fully restored in the 1900 style. Time seems to stand still, as if the family has simply stepped out.

AN UNPRECEDENTED EXHIBITION

The former dining room, renovated to museum standards, provides a special setting to admire original works by the master and his friends through an exceptional exhibition held every summer.
