THE FAMILY’S SUMMER mansion
Open to public since 2017, the house in Essoyes was bought by the Renoir couple in 1896. Madame Renoir realized her dream of buying a pied-à-terre in her native village. It was with this house in the south of the Champagne region that Renoir, the Parisian, became a homeowner for the first time. It was not just a house that Renoir bought, but also a region that he ended up adopting.
Renoir fell under the spell of the village of Aube : the generosity of the winegrowers, the beauty of the landscape, the light so special to this region of Champagne.
This holiday was passed down from generation to generation, right down to the great-grandchildren. Real country parties are organised between family members and close friends, worthy of the Déjeuner des Canotiers…
A RETURN TO THE PAST
The mansion is reached via the rue de l’Extra, on the side of the painter’s studio. Follow the path up to the house, leaving behind the artist and discovering the man himself.
Crossing the threshold of the family home, you are immersed in the Belle-Époque era, in an interior entirely restored in the style of 1900. Time is suspended, and the family seems to have disappeared.
Wallpapers reproduced in identical style, table corners dulled by a father-hen Renoir : plunge, not without emotion, into a more intimate vision of the painter and his family through the living rooms and bedrooms filled with family mementos and period objects.
ORIGINAL EXHIBITIONS
Specially fitted out to meet museum standards, the former dining room is a privileged setting where you can admire original paintings by the master and his friends in a special exhibition held every summer.
