AT THE FAMILY HOME
Renoir, The Reinvented Work – From June 21 to September 21, 2025
Far from being a simple retrospective, the exhibition explores what became of Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s work after his death in 1919. His three sons then inherited around 700 paintings. As early as 1922, they began organizing their sale through the Barbazanges-Hodebert Gallery, an influential venue on the Parisian art scene in the early 20th century.
Some of the practices established at that time still raise questions today : small- and medium-format canvases were cut into fragments, sometimes stamped with a mark reproducing the painter’s signature. The Renoir estate did not invent this method, but it appears to have adopted it on a large scale—reinventing it in its own way.
